Original mural was an eyesrore, which doesn’t make this any less stupid.
This strikes me as a fairly post-awesome response to the built environment. Want to get your name out there? Paint over a celebrated local athlete and let people talk about how post-modern and creative you are!
(For comparison’s sake, here is a blog post that shows how the mural looked prior to this artist’s ‘intervention’. http://pennerchronicles.blogspot.ca/2010/05/prairie-rites-of-spring.html).*
In all seriousness, though, this is a microcosm of what is wrong with our local approach to design and the built environment. We do not value history, and we certainly do not value the presence/stories of people who are not in the dominant, elite, powerful group that makes the decisions about what is built and who is celebrated. This artist, Food Lot, should be ashamed of what he/she has done. Or maybe I should thank him/her for so elegantly illustrating what I have been writing about regarding our attitudes to Indigenous/minority peoples and the value we accord their stories and their place in the fabric of the city and its history.
While my central thesis of the notion of ‘post-awesome’ is mostly about thoughtless buildings that spring up in response to greed and boom cycles, it is also about voice and whose voice is heard amongst the din of condos, office blocks, retail megaliths, bars and ‘revitalization’ schemes that inevitably reproduce a whitewashed, risk-averse, and uninspired vision of what Amiskwaskahegan, our home in the Beaver Hills, should and could be.
